Friends who don’t understand plastics often confuse thermoplastics with thermosetting plastics, but they are quite different. Thermoplastics become soft and flow when heated, and become hard when cooled. This process is reversible and can be repeated. Polyethylene, polypropylene, etc. are all thermoplastics, which are physical changes. The change of thermoset plastic is irreversible.
The performance characteristics of thermoplastic glass fiber reinforced plastics can be summarized as follows.
The specific strength of reinforced plastics is better than that of general metal materials. Although the density of glass fiber is higher than that of organic fiber, it is lower than that of general metal, and it is equivalent to aluminum, and its value is about 2.25~-2.9 (carbon fiber density is 1.85). But even so, the density of FRTP is between 1.1-16, which is only 15-16 of steel. However, the increased mechanical strength is very significant, so it can obtain high mechanical strength with a small unit weight. It is a new type of lightweight and high-strength engineering structural material.
Good thermal performance
Generally, unreinforced thermoplastics have a relatively low heat distortion temperature and can only be used below 50-10. However, the heat distortion temperature of reinforced plastic is significantly increased, so it can be used for long-term work at a temperature above 100°C to about 150°C to 20°C.
Good electrical insulation properties
Good chemical resistance
For example, if glass fiber is changed to carbon fiber, boron fiber or asbestos fiber, the strength and corrosion resistance will be improved accordingly.
